The problem with plastic
A quick slideshow
An enormous plastic factory
Humans make vast quantities of plastic, almost all of it from oil
Trouble is, plastic trash ends up in the oceans
Plastic that isn't recycled should end up in landfills but an enormous amount gets into the oceans
This poor albatross is stuck in an old plastic fishing net
If it can't free itself it will die. This is called "ghost fishing"
I'm looking at a sample of beach sand through a microscope
But it's not all sand. It's full of tiny pieces of plastic called microplastics which are a serious problem
Tiny marine creatures mistake them for food and eat them
Nurdles are a type of microplastic
These micro-plastics soak up toxic chemicals...
… making the tiny creatures sick
Bigger sea creatures eat the smaller ones
But humans are at the top of the food chain…
But there are solutions. Here are some…
Here's a recycling centre we get money back plastic bottles which can then be used again
And new types of plastics will soon be replacing the everlasting made from oil
They will break down naturally. To find out more, read my guide!
